Volunteer Opportunities at NVHC

Thank you for your interest in serving the NVHC community. Each of us brings different talents, passions, and experiences to our holy community and through each person’s unique contribution, NVHC is stronger. We have identified numerous areas where NVHC could benefit from your time, energy, and expertise. Please take a look at the opportunities below and indicate ways that would be meaningful for you to serve at this time. We will then connect you to someone who can help you get started.

Please check back regularly, as we continue to add opportunities to the list.

NVHC Cares

NVHC Cares is our cadre of volunteers who are at-the-ready to help care for our community members in need and celebrate their simchas (joyful moments).

Calling Team
This Team is made up of volunteers who take a two-week rotation each year to make calls to community members who would benefit from outreach for support or celebration.
  • We ask you to commit to making calls for the same two-week rotation each year.
  • The Calls Team Lead will email you with instructions on who to call and why at the beginning of your rotation.
  • The number of people to call can range from 1 to 10.
  • We are looking for people who are comfortable having a telephone conversation, willing to take the time to listen to the needs of our members on the phone with patience and compassion, and with a schedule that has the flexibility to make calls during that two-week period.

Meals Team
This Team is made up of people who are willing to make and deliver a meal to a member of our community who is in need of such support.
  • The Meals Team Lead sends out an email and link to a sign-up form that includes the name and address of the person in need, how much food to provide (e.g. for 4 people), and any dietary restrictions.
  • We are looking for people to join our mailing list so that we can broaden the number of people available when someone in our community needs a meal delivered.

Challah Team
This Team is made up of people who are willing to bake or buy a loaf of challah and deliver it to a community member just before Shabbat, so that they will know that in their joyful or challenging time we, their NVHC community, are thinking of them and wish them a meaningful Shabbat.
  • The Challah Team Lead sends out an email and sign-up form that includes the name and location of the person in need.
  • We are looking for people to join our mailing list so that we can broaden the number of people available when someone in our community needs a challah delivered.

Rides Team
This Team is made up of people who are willing to provide a ride to and/or from NVHC activities for our community members who are not able to transport themselves.
  • The Rides Team Lead sends out an email with the details of when the ride is needed, who needs the ride, and where the person lives.
  • We are looking for people to join our mailing list so that we can broaden the number of people available when someone in our community needs assistance attending an NVHC community event.
  • Our Rides Team volunteers must have a functioning vehicle and valid driver’s license.

Welcome Team

The Welcome Team assists as an extension of the NVHC clergy and staff to broaden our community outreach to new and prospective members.
Welcome Team Lead
The Welcome Team Lead will be the liaison between the NVHC administration and the Welcome Team volunteers.
  • Work with the clergy, staff, and Board of Trustees to create and refine the protocols and procedures for the operation of the Welcome Team.
  • Participate in recruiting volunteers for the Welcome Team.
  • Act as a resource for the Team Leads to help ensure that their teams run smoothly.

Shabbat Schmooze Ambassadors
NVHC hosts a Shabbat Schmooze (a pre-Shabbat dinner and social hour) for new and prospective members most months to enable them to meet our clergy, Board of Trustees, and other NVHC members.
  • We are looking for volunteers to serve as ambassadors to help organize and run the Shabbat Schmooze.
  • The ambassador will follow a checklist that gives guidance on timelines, activities, and responsible parties starting 3 weeks before the event.
  • The ambassador will coordinate with the NVHC Executive Director to distribute the information about an upcoming event.
  • The ambassador will order the food (currently we are using Wegmans in Reston), pick it up, and deliver it to NVHC on the afternoon of the event.
  • The ambassador will attend the event and facilitate the circulation of the Board of Trustees and clergy attendees to ensure that all new and prospective members have the opportunity to meet them.

NVHC Change, Social Action Committee (SAC)

NVHC Change is committed to Tikkun Olam, repairing the world.  We contribute to our larger community by feeding the hungry, aiding refugee families, mentoring elementary school students, advocating and community organizing on local, state, and national issues such as police reform and affordable housing, supporting interfaith partnerships, and so much more.

Volunteer for one small task like preparing a meal or writing postcards to "get out the vote" or join a team to participate on an ongoing basis.  The time commitment is up to you. Some of our projects can be done at home (from cooking to researching issues) and some are done with a group. Sign up to join the SAC mailing list to learn more about our volunteer opportunities or contact us to share your interests and we will get you involved.
